When I started the company in 2007, one of my first clients was a young couple with two adorable small children. They invited me to conduct an energy audit to confirm they were making the right choice by replacing their windows. They had been told by a window company that they needed new windows (for $40,000!!!) and wanted to be sure they were spending their money wisely. After conducting the audit, I informed them new windows would barely benefit comfort and savings (not what the window salesman had “guaranteed”). In fact, using powerful modeling software to compute the home’s energy pathways and savings, I found they would benefit far more by focusing on adding insulation and sealing the air leakage points of the house…for less than 1/10th of the price.

On my way home I remember scratching my head and thinking of better uses for $40,000. Fifteen years from now those savings could make a huge dent in their children’s college tuition. I realized that building science can make a significant difference in people’s lives.
